Why we like it
"Honestly the best BBQ I have ever had" is a real Yelp review of Copper Hill, and we've heard the same thing from a lot of regulars in Sand Canyon.
Copper Hill BBQ in the Sand Canyon plaza is the city's biggest BBQ room and the family-friendly default for SCV's BBQ category. 540+ Yelp reviews and a 4.6-star average put it at the top of the city's BBQ rankings, and the smoker output justifies the praise: brisket, tri-tip, pulled pork, chicken, and ribs all done with the patience that real BBQ needs. The room handles a six-top of friends, a four-top with kids, and a date night without anyone feeling out of place. Open daily 11am to 8pm, which makes it one of the easier weekday-dinner BBQ stops anywhere in the city.
If you live in Canyon Country or Sand Canyon, this is probably already on your list. If you live elsewhere in SCV and you've never been, the drive is worth it. Copper Hill is a real BBQ kitchen, not a BBQ-themed kitchen.
The vibe
Casual-counter, leaning sit-down. You order at the counter, find a table, and the food comes to you. The room is bigger than it looks from the outside; the patio handles overflow on weekends. Wood, smoker smell, butcher-paper service, plastic cutlery for the casual feel. Family-friendly through dinner; the room absorbs kid energy without anyone noticing.
The Sand Canyon corridor isn't where most SCV residents drive for dinner, which means the room is rarely as crowded as a comparable Valencia BBQ would be. That's part of the charm. Show up at 6:15 on a Thursday and you'll have your pick of tables.
What to order
- The brisket. Smoked low and slow, sliced to order, served with a generous portion. The kitchen's most-mentioned protein and the right place to start.
- Tri-tip. California BBQ's home-state cut, done well here. Less fall-apart than brisket but still tender, and the bark is the move.
- Pulled pork sandwich. The casual BBQ option. Pile-high portions, brioche bun, slaw on top.
- Ribs. Worth the messy hands. Available as a half or full rack; portion-share with a 2-meat plate if you want both ribs and brisket.
- 2-meat or 3-meat plate for the indecisive. Pick across brisket, tri-tip, pulled pork, chicken, ribs. The right way to taste the kitchen.
- BBQ sauces. "All their BBQ sauce are fabulous" is a real Yelp call and worth the table-side test. Multiple house sauces; try them all.
- Pastrami sandwich, surprisingly. The kitchen's deli-leaning cousin to the BBQ menu. A sleeper pick.
When to go
Weekday lunch (11am-1pm) is the no-line slot and the kitchen is dialed in. Tuesday through Thursday dinner is the easiest version of the room. Friday and Saturday after 6pm fill up but there's almost always a table within 15 minutes; the patio is the move on a clear evening.
Open daily 11am-8pm. The kitchen runs out of certain proteins on busy weekends; arrive earlier if you have your heart set on the rib plate.
Good to know
Parking: Big shared lot in the Sand Canyon plaza. Plenty of space. Easy in and out from the Sand Canyon Road exit off the 14.
Counter service: Order at the counter, find a seat, food comes to you. No reservations, no waiting list. Online ordering through Toast for pickup.
Dietary: BBQ is what it is, but the salads on the menu are real and the sides include vegetable-leaning options. Gluten-free buns available on request. Vegetarian and vegan diners will find this a difficult restaurant; the side dishes are the play.
Kids: Easy. Kid-sized BBQ plates, mac and cheese, the room handles the noise without fuss. Family-friendly through dinner.
Takeout and catering: The kitchen is built for it. BBQ travels well, especially the smoked proteins. Catering for office parties and family gatherings; order through the website.
Sand Canyon location: The Sand Canyon plaza is set back from Soledad Canyon Road; use the Sand Canyon Road or Lost Canyon Road exits. Don't miss the turn into Village Way.

Frequently asked questions
Is Copper Hill the best BBQ in Santa Clarita?
By Yelp consensus and review volume, yes. Nothing else in the city has this combination of rating (4.6 stars) and volume (540+ reviews). Slab Daddy Craft BBQ and Rub It N Luv It are highly-rated small-batch competitors but operate as caterers without a fixed dining room. Our Place BBQ & Soul Food is the other Canyon Country option, smaller and more soul-food-leaning. For the casual-counter family BBQ run, Copper Hill is the answer.
Where exactly is Sand Canyon?
Sand Canyon is the eastern edge of Canyon Country, off the 14 freeway between Soledad Canyon Road and Lost Canyon Road. It's a quieter residential neighborhood with a tighter retail footprint than Valencia or central Canyon Country. The Copper Hill plaza is one of the few sit-down BBQ rooms in this corner of SCV.
Is there anything for vegetarians?
Sides and salads, mostly. Mac and cheese, beans (some are vegetarian, some are not, ask), salads with optional protein. This is not a vegetarian-friendly menu by design; if you're feeding a mixed group, plan accordingly or steer the vegetarian to a different stop.
