Why we like it
The most-reviewed sit-down in Santa Clarita, and the easiest answer when an out-of-town friend asks where the city actually eats.
Newhall Refinery is the city's volume leader, the gastropub anchor of Old Town Newhall's Main Street block, and the room most likely to be packed on any given Saturday night. Nearly 1,900 Yelp reviews puts it at the top of the SCV review-count rankings by a wide margin. The pull is real: a craft-beer program with twenty rotating taps, a New American kitchen that knows what to do with a burger and a cocktail bar that knows what to do at 9pm. They opened in May 2013, and the formula has been working since.
The room is the kind of place that handles every category at once. A two-top in the corner for a date. A six-top of friends ordering a flight of beers. A family at the front table with a kid in a high chair. Newhall Refinery is the answer when you don't know what you want, just that you want something good in a room that feels like Santa Clarita.
The vibe
Industrial-pub, leaning warm rather than loud. Reclaimed-wood feel, a long bar at the back, table seating that fans out into the dining room. The Main Street location is a draw on its own; you can walk to a coffee shop before, or a bar after, without moving the car. On weekends the patio is one of the better-occupied seats in Old Town Newhall, partly because Main Street itself is the show.
The crowd skews adult after 8pm but family-friendly through dinner. The volume rises with the bar crowd, but the dining room never tips into nightclub mode. It's a city restaurant, not a destination restaurant, and that's the right pitch for SCV.
What to order
- The signature blend burger. American cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado, pickles, red onion, thousand island on a brioche bun. The kitchen's calling card and the dish that anchors most Yelp reviews.
- The double mustard grilled patties burger. American cheese, bacon onion jam, pickles on brioche. The "I want the chef-y version" play.
- Rice plate with beef patty, fried egg, chili crisp. A signature that doesn't show up at any other SCV gastropub. The chili crisp is the move.
- Refinery Fries. Loaded, generous, made for sharing with a beer.
- Weekend brunch, Saturday and Sunday from 9am. Avocado Toast Ciabatta, breakfast burgers, the calmest version of the room.
- A draft beer flight. Twenty rotating taps; ask the bartender what's freshest.
When to go
Tuesday through Thursday 5:30pm-7pm is the calmest version of the dining room. Friday and Saturday after 6:30pm fills up fast and reservations matter. The weekend brunch, Saturday and Sunday from 9am to about 11:30am, is one of Old Town Newhall's underrated meals; the room is bright, the patio is open, and Main Street is just waking up.
Closed Monday. Friday runs latest at 10:30pm; Sunday closes earliest at 8pm. Always confirm before going for a late dinner.
Good to know
Parking: Public lots on Main Street and the side streets fill up by 7pm on weekends. The lot behind the train depot is your best bet on Saturday night. Walking from a parked car is part of the Old Town Newhall experience.
Reservations: Strongly recommended for Friday and Saturday dinner. Call (661) 388-4477 or book on OpenTable. Walk-ins handled at the host stand; expect a 30-45 minute wait on peak Saturdays.
Dietary: Vegetarian and gluten-free options on the menu. The kitchen will swap a brioche bun for gluten-free on request. Vegan options are thinner; ask the server about a built plate.
Kids: Welcome through dinner. Kids' menu, highchairs, and a room that absorbs noise without fuss. Family seating tilts to the early hours; bring kids before 7pm.
Beer: Twenty rotating drafts plus a longer bottle list. The custom draught system is a real point of pride; ask the bartender to walk you through what's on right now.
Patio: Heated, partial coverage, and Main Street view. Worth asking for when the weather is good.

Frequently asked questions
Is Newhall Refinery the best restaurant in Santa Clarita?
By Yelp review volume, yes. Nothing in the city is close. By rating-times-volume, it's in the top five. By "where do I take an out-of-town friend on a Saturday," it's the consensus pick alongside The Local Pub & Grill and Piccola Trattoria.
Is the weekend brunch worth showing up for?
Yes. Saturday and Sunday from 9am, the room is calm, the patio is open, and the Avocado Toast Ciabatta and breakfast burgers are sharper than the Old Town Newhall brunch crowd realizes. Reservations less critical than dinner; walk-ins fine before 11am.
Is Newhall Refinery in Old Town Newhall?
Yes. It's on Main Street, the densest food-and-drink block in the city. Park once and you can walk to The Old Town Junction across the street, multiple bars, and the Saturday farmers market without moving the car.
